Red, White and Blueshirts

Earlier this week, Rangers head coach John Tortorella was named as one of the assistant coaches for Ron Wilson and the U.S. Olympic Hockey Team. That news was followed by the invitations of blueshirts captain Chris Drury and rising star Ryan Callahan to the 2010 Olympic orientation camp for the U.S. squad. Now it’s Marc Staal’s turn to get a chance to represent his country.

Marc Staal was invited earlier today in participate the Team Canada’s orientation camp to take place August 24-27 in Calgary. Staal joins 15 other defenseman such as Washington’s Mike Green, Calgary’s Jay Bouwmeester and Philadelphia’s Chris Pronger at the camp in an attempt to show Team Canada’s brain trust led by Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman and Detroit head coach Mike Babcock that he is ready to represent his country at the 2010 games in Vancouver. Staal’s brothers Eric of the Carolina Hurricanes and Jordan of the Pittsburgh Penguins were also invited to the camp.

For an interesting read on Glen Sather getting a center to play with Marian Gaborik and possibly checking on the status of  former Rangers blue liner Sergei Zubov, check out Larry Brooks’ column here.
